What to charge to replace receptacle with usb-c combo receptacle
This is a device swap or addition, the bread-and-butter work where minimums decide whether you profit. Figure about 36 minutes on a Normal run, with roughly $32 of material at contractor cost before markup. At a $120/hour shop rate - the worked example we use across this site - the flat-rate math for "replace receptacle with usb-c combo receptacle" comes out like this:
| Easy | everything cooperates: good access, sound wiring, no surprises | $100 |
| Normal | the typical version of this job in an occupied home | $115 |
| Hard | poor access, aged or altered wiring, extra protection or staging | $140 |
Same math: hours x grade x your rate, plus material at 25% markup, rounded up to $5. Don't know your rate? Find it free in two minutes.
What makes this job Easy or Hard
Device work grades mostly on what you find behind the plate. Easy is a healthy box, copper conductors with slack, and a device that comes out clean. Normal is the usual mix: paint-sealed plates, short conductors, a crowded box, backstabbed connections you re-terminate properly. Hard starts when the box is damaged or undersized, the wiring is aluminum or cloth-covered, there is no ground where the new device needs one, or you are fishing a new run through insulated finished walls. Anything fished is a different animal from anything with open access - that is why the add-a-receptacle tasks appear twice in the book. Old work boxes in plaster, mirrored walls and tiled backsplashes all push toward Hard. The part is cheap; the grade is about the wall around it.
Don't forget
At these numbers this is a small-ticket task: apply your minimum job charge (most one-van shops use $100-150) or bundle it with other work on the same visit - the drive and setup cost the same either way.
Small device jobs live or die on the minimum job charge. If your minimum is $150, a $70 receptacle swap is a $150 ticket unless it rides along with other work - say so on the phone.
Questions
Why is there a price range instead of one number?
The grades price the wall, not the part. A receptacle in an open garage and the same receptacle behind a tiled backsplash with short aluminum conductors are different jobs at the same hourly rate.
Is it worth doing one small device swap on its own?
Only at your minimum job charge. Most shops set a $100-150 minimum so a single-device visit still covers the drive, setup and paperwork - or they bundle it with other small tasks on the same visit.
