Flat Rate Math

What to charge to replace receptacle with gfci receptacle

This is protection and life-safety work, where the code book sets the scope as much as the customer does. Figure about 45 minutes on a Normal run, with roughly $24 of material at contractor cost before markup. At a $120/hour shop rate - the worked example we use across this site - the flat-rate math for "replace receptacle with gfci receptacle" comes out like this:

Easyeverything cooperates: good access, sound wiring, no surprises$105
Normalthe typical version of this job in an occupied home$120
Hardpoor access, aged or altered wiring, extra protection or staging$155
Easy $105Normal $120Hard $155

Same math: hours x grade x your rate, plus material at 25% markup, rounded up to $5. Don't know your rate? Find it free in two minutes.

What makes this job Easy or Hard

Safety-device work is usually clean, which is why most of it sits at Easy or Normal. Easy is a straight device or breaker swap in a healthy panel with a clearly identified circuit. Normal adds the usual friction: identifying which breaker actually feeds the bathroom, multi-wire branch circuits that complicate AFCI installs, or a first-generation breaker that nuisance-trips and needs chasing. Hard is when the device is the messenger: a GFCI that will not hold because something downstream is genuinely leaking, shared neutrals that have to be untangled, or detector circuits with broken interconnects hidden in ceilings. Smoke and CO work grades on ceiling height and how many stories the interconnect crosses. The parts are commodity; the grade pays for the circuit knowledge. When a protection device will not reset, you are back in troubleshooting - say so and switch pricing before you burn the afternoon.

Don't forget

At these numbers this is a small-ticket task: apply your minimum job charge (most one-van shops use $100-150) or bundle it with other work on the same visit - the drive and setup cost the same either way.

Questions

Why is there a price range instead of one number?
A protection device that installs and holds is Easy money; one that reveals a leaking circuit or a shared neutral turns into diagnosis. The grades keep both outcomes profitable.

Why is an AFCI breaker so much more than a regular one?
The breaker itself costs several times a standard breaker, and multi-wire circuits and nuisance-trip chasing can add real time. The price reflects the part and the risk, not padding.
