What to charge to install nema 14-50 outlet for level 2 ev charger (within 20 ft of panel)

This is outdoor, EV and generator work - the growth end of residential, priced by distance, weather sealing and load. Figure about 4 hours on a Normal run, with roughly $260 of material at contractor cost before markup. At a $120/hour shop rate - the worked example we use across this site - the flat-rate math for "install nema 14-50 outlet for level 2 ev charger (within 20 ft of panel)" comes out like this:

Easyeverything cooperates: good access, sound wiring, no surprises$710
Normalthe typical version of this job in an occupied home$805
Hardpoor access, aged or altered wiring, extra protection or staging$975
Easy $710Normal $805Hard $975

What makes this job Easy or Hard

Outdoor and high-load work grades on distance and on everything between the panel and the endpoint. Easy is short and sheltered: an EV outlet on the same wall as the panel, an inlet box beside the meter. Normal covers typical garage runs, modest trenches someone else dug and ordinary weather-sealing. Hard is long runs, finished space between panel and destination, panel upgrades hiding inside "just add a charger" requests, and anything where load calculation says the service is already near its limit. EV work especially deserves a load calc before you quote - the charger is easy, the spare capacity often is not. Generator interlocks and transfer switches grade on panel condition and conductor room. Underground work depends entirely on who trenches and what the soil hides; put trenching, conduit depth and restoration in writing. Hot tubs add GFCI, disconnect placement rules and wet-location discipline. Outside, every termination is a future corrosion call unless you seal it like you mean it.

Don't forget

Permit territory: this category often requires a permit and inspection. Price the permit as its own line and count the scheduling time as real labor.

Many jurisdictions require permits for EV circuits, generators and hot tubs - line-item the permit, and do the load calculation before you commit to a price.

Questions

Why is there a price range instead of one number?
Distance from the panel, what is between the panel and the endpoint, and available service capacity move these jobs between grades - the endpoint hardware is the small part.

Can my panel handle an EV charger?
Only a load calculation says for sure. If the service is near capacity, the honest quote includes freeing capacity or an upgrade - which is why this work is quoted after a look at the panel, not from a text message.
