What to charge to install ceiling fan in new location (attic access)

This is a ceiling fan job, where the box rating and ceiling access decide everything. Figure about 3.5 hours on a Normal run, with roughly $95 of material at contractor cost before markup. At a $120/hour shop rate - the worked example we use across this site - the flat-rate math for "install ceiling fan in new location (attic access)" comes out like this:

What makes this job Easy or Hard

Fan work grades almost entirely on what is above the ceiling. Easy is a fan-rated box already in place: the job is assembly and hanging. Normal is replacing a light fixture with a fan, which usually means installing a brace box through the hole - routine, but real work overhead with your arms up. Hard is a new location: cutting in, fishing the switch leg, working an attic that may be 130 degrees or may not exist, and staging for vaulted or high ceilings. Fan weight and blade span matter; so does whether the customer wants separate switching for light and fan, which can mean pulling a new three-conductor run. Remotes and wall controls are quick adds on a good day and diagnostic rabbit holes when pairing fails. If you cannot verify the box rating before quoting, quote as if you are installing a brace box, because you probably are.

Don't forget

Quote the grade honestly before you start, and say what would move the job to Hard while you are still standing in front of the customer.

Questions

Why is there a price range instead of one number?
The grades price the ceiling, not the fan. An existing fan-rated box is Easy; a new location with attic work and a fished switch leg is Hard at the same hourly rate.

Should I charge a service call fee on top of this?
Fold your trip into the price for booked fan work, but keep a minimum job charge so a bare remote-kit install or wobble repair still pays for the visit.
