What to charge to add c-wire for thermostat
This is low-voltage and smart-home work, where the wiring is simple and the ecosystem is not. Figure about 1.5 hours on a Normal run, with roughly $20 of material at contractor cost before markup. At a $120/hour shop rate - the worked example we use across this site - the flat-rate math for "add c-wire for thermostat" comes out like this:
| Easy | everything cooperates: good access, sound wiring, no surprises | $170 |
| Normal | the typical version of this job in an occupied home | $205 |
| Hard | poor access, aged or altered wiring, extra protection or staging | $270 |
Same math: hours x grade x your rate, plus material at 25% markup, rounded up to $5. Don't know your rate? Find it free in two minutes.
What makes this job Easy or Hard
Low-voltage work grades on pathways and on the software at the end of the wire. Easy is a device swap where the infrastructure exists: neutral in the box, C-wire at the furnace, doorbell wiring live and sound. Normal is the common case with one complication - a fished Cat6 run with decent attic access, a TV mount with an in-wall kit through one clean stud bay. Hard is exterior camera runs, masonry, insulated walls with blocking, and the jobs where the existing wiring turns out to be stapled mid-span or broken somewhere unreachable. The quiet time-eater is commissioning: pairing, apps, accounts and firmware can eat half an hour per device, and it is real work the customer sees none of. Scope the smart-home ecosystem before quoting - a switch that needs a hub the customer does not own is not a switch install, it is a project. Price app setup and pairing into the grade, and cap the free tech support in writing.
Don't forget
Quote the grade honestly before you start, and say what would move the job to Hard while you are still standing in front of the customer.
Questions
Why is there a price range instead of one number?
Existing wiring and pathways set the grade: a smart switch with a neutral present is Easy; the same switch needing a fished neutral or a hub the house does not have is a bigger job at the same rate.
Why does a cheap smart device cost real money to install?
The device is the small part. Pathways, termination, pairing and app setup are labor, and the grade prices the wall and the commissioning, not the gadget.
