What to Charge for a 200-Amp Panel Upgrade: A Pro's Pricing Breakdown

A one-man shop with a $120 shop rate should charge roughly $1,850 to $2,100 for a like-for-like 200-amp panel replacement, and $2,800 to $4,000 or more for a true 100-to-200-amp service upgrade, with the permit quoted as a separate line. Those numbers come from hours, material, markup and a difficulty grade - not from the homeowner cost websites, which report what customers paid to shops of every size in every market and are useless for setting your price. Here is how to build the number from your own shop rate, and why the three jobs that customers all call “a panel upgrade” need three different prices.
Three different jobs
Customers say “panel upgrade” for three jobs that share a breaker panel and not much else.
1. Like-for-like panel replacement. Same service size, new panel, new breakers, re-land the existing circuits. No utility involvement, no meter or mast work. This is the job most of the homeowner price ranges are quietly describing.
2. Service upgrade, 100A to 200A, panel only. New 200A panel and main, plus whatever the jurisdiction requires to bring the service entrance to 200A on the load side - often new feeders from the meter. Utility coordination and a disconnect are common.
3. Full service upgrade. Everything in number 2 plus a new meter socket, mast or riser, weatherhead, service entrance conductors and grounding electrode system. Utility disconnect and reconnect, inspection scheduling, sometimes a service-drop upgrade by the utility.
If your book has one line called “panel upgrade,” you are either overcharging the first job or losing money on the third.
Where the homeowner numbers come from
Consumer sites report national figures like $1,300 to $3,000 for a 200-amp upgrade, with metro markets at $2,500 to $5,500 and some cities well above that. Those ranges blend all three jobs, every region, and every size of shop. A 40-truck company with TV ads has 40 percent overhead; a one-man shop has different math. Use the homeowner figures for one thing only: knowing what your customer has already read before you arrive.
Price it from your shop rate
Start with the shop rate. From our hourly rate guide, a solo shop with $27,200 overhead, an $85,000 salary target and 1,320 billable hours needs about $120 an hour. Then:
price = (base hours x grade multiplier x shop rate) + (material x (1 + markup)) + permit and admin, rounded up to $5
Material markup on panels and big-ticket gear is lower than on devices - 15 to 25 percent rather than 25 to 35 - because the base cost is high. Use 25 percent below for consistency with the rest of the book; drop it to 20 if your market is tight.

Easy is a modern house, clear access, labeled circuits. Hard is a 1960s basement with short feeders, unlabeled circuits, a finished wall or a panel over a water heater. Pick the grade on the walkthrough, not after.

All three tables use a $120 shop rate. If your rate is $95 or $145, every labor cell scales with it; that is why the rate, not the panel price, is the number to get right first.
Permits, admin and utility time
Quote the permit as its own line. Permit fees run roughly $150 to $400 in most jurisdictions, and a small admin fee of $40 to $75 for the time spent pulling it and scheduling inspection is normal. Listing it separately does two things: the customer sees that you are permitting the work, and a fee change at the county does not come out of your labor.
Utility coordination is billable time. A disconnect and reconnect window can eat two hours of waiting. Either build it into the base hours for jobs 2 and 3 (the tables above assume you did) or add a line for it. Do not let it become the unbillable part of a $4,000 job.
Regional spread, honestly
The same full service upgrade that prices at about $4,000 from a $120 shop rate in a mid-cost market can legitimately be $6,000 or more in a high-cost metro, because the shop rate there is $170, permits are $600, and the utility takes a week to schedule. That is not gouging; it is the overhead engine producing a different answer from different inputs. Run your own numbers rather than importing a national range.
Presenting the price
Customers arrive having read “$1,300 to $3,000.” When your full service upgrade is $4,055, do not argue with the website. Walk them through the three-job distinction: “The number you saw is a panel swap. Yours needs the meter and mast replaced and the utility involved, which is a different job. Here is what is included.” Then hand them one price per option - like-for-like at $1,845, or the full upgrade at $4,055 - and let them choose. Two clear options close better than one defended one.

Frequently asked questions
Should I include the permit in the flat price? List it separately. Bundling it hides a cost you do not control and makes your labor look more expensive than it is.
How do I handle a customer-supplied panel? Charge full labor at the appropriate grade, add a small handling and inspection allowance, and put in writing that the warranty covers your work, not their part. Many shops decline customer-supplied gear on service work altogether.
What if the inspector requires extra work - AFCI breakers, surge protection, grounding updates? Quote them as add-on lines from your book at the walkthrough when you can anticipate them, and include a “code-required additions” clause for what you cannot. Never absorb a $600 breaker upgrade inside a flat price you set before you knew about it.
Is 6 hours realistic for a like-for-like swap? For a competent solo electrician on a normal house, yes. If your last five took 8, your base hours are 8, and the Hard grade should cover the ones that take 11. The book has to reflect your hours, not a textbook.
